My First Little Debate on Facebook

Here is a quote I posted on Facebook in early 2012 and the comments that proceeded. Oh, the memories!

“Religion has actually convinced people that there’s an invisible man — living in the sky — who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do..And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever `til the end of time! …But He loves you.” – George Carlin

Janie: Dude, stop reading…no bueno

Adam: It’s only what I believe.

Jayson: Okay, I have to say this…. for an atheist, you sure do post a lot about religion. It’s like your so religious about not being religious. I mean come on, read your reply… “It’s only what I believe”. Yet your telling people indirectly, “Stop shoving your beliefs in my face. The Irony! From now on, I’m going to say that you are a religious person. THE BELIEF OF NON BELIEVING!!!!! Good luck with that religious cuz 😀

Adam: ‎:) According to Dictionary.com belief is “an opinion or conviction: a belief that the earth is flat.” The word belief was not created for religious purposes. And as for being “religious about not being religious,” you can substitute the first ‘religious’ with the word passionate – I am passionate about not being religious. The reason for this is because since I was a small boy, I never believed in God and I was too afraid to say something….afraid of being shunned and outcasted. But now I know that I’m not alone. Did you know there are more atheists in the U.S. then there are Jews? However people are too afraid to say anything. Well, no more for me. I post what I post to let others, who were like me, know that they are not alone. It’s okay to think what they think. But more to your point, just because I have a strong conviction towards something does not mean I am religious.

Rosie: praying to the “invisible man — living in the sky –” to have mercy on you.

Adam: You may want to read the bible again because God is anything but merciful. Numbers 15:32 – Then the LORD said to Moses, “The man shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.” And that’s just for some guy picking up wood on a Sunday.

Stephen: I saw that documentary. It was pretty interesting. What fascinates me is how everyone has a belief. Shit if you believed in space monkeys I wouldn’t care. Your still my boy…

Rosie: It is never ending with you, so regardless, atheist or space monkeys, I still love you because it is “one of the 10 things from his special list”. Aren’t you the lucky one?

Adam: I could also say you’re never ending, but regardless, Christian or whatever, I love you too because of the way I feel and not because it’s on some “special list.”
—END—

I wish I could go back in time and say a couple things differently. Ah we’ll, you live and you learn.
